DARWIN DEEZ #040

Date: Tuesday 2nd October 2018

Venue: Komedia, Brighton

With a three year hiatus, Darwin Deez returns with fourth album ’10 Songs That Happened When You Left Me With My Stupid Heart’. Leading track and first single from the album ‘The Worlds Best Kisser’ was released back in May of this year. The track is a minute and a half of A Capella singing which at first threw me but the album as a whole grabbed my attention with its darker sound and lyrics of heartbreak. With such an original sound and a UK tour announced it would be rude not to attend downstairs at Komedia to see the North Carolina born Deez in all his glory.

A packed out venue welcomed Brooklyn based band Darwin Deez, I rarely say this but this show really surprised me. (In a positive way!) Majority of shows I attend I have an idea of how it will play out and what the set might include but this was not one of those easily predicted shows.
I saw him at The Great Escape years ago on the Brighton Pier to which I can’t remember much of due to too many beers in the sun, so safe to say I was excited to see them live.
Playing songs from across all four albums brought excitement from different areas of the crowd ergo pleasing one and all.

It really was a flawless show, minus one dud chord played which brought a rise smile from Darwin and fellow band members. With audience interaction at a high level it broke all barriers down and felt like everyone was included, even banter was exchanged and laughed off too.
The infamous ‘Chicken Dance’ the band perform was also displayed early on in the set to the delight of the crowd and with Darwin’s rapping abilities also on display what wasn’t to like?
First song to the fray was ‘Constellations’ which was from the debut self titled album released back in 2009. Other song highlights included ‘Up In The Clouds’ from the same album, ‘Getaway’ the latest single from the most recent released album and the obvious ‘Radar Detector’ played during the encore with a mosh pit ensuing much to Darwin’s humorous delight.

A thoroughly enjoyable gig with Darwin sticking around after to meet fans, sign merch and have photos. A true American gent, the band continue a UK tour including these shows:

Saturday 6th October – Neighbourhood Festival, Manchester
Sunday 7th October – Workman’s Club, Dublin
Tuesday 9th October – Bodega Social, Nottingham
Wednesday 10th October – Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds
Thursday 11th October – O2 Institute 3, Birmingham
